Garrison Plays Fairbank-Nideffer Tonight in First Round at La Costa
Rosalyn Fairbank-Nideffer meets Zina Garrison at 7 tonight in a first-round match of the $225,000 Mazda Tennis Classic at La Costa.
In another first-round match today, Monique Javer will play Jo Durie of Britain.
Top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini plays Tuesday night against the winner of today’s match between Gretchen Magers and Kimberly Po.
Jennifer Capriati, who defeated Monica Seles in last year’s final, plays Wednesday night against the winner of the Judith Weisner-Julie Halard match.
Capriati, seeded second, is scheduled to arrive today in San Diego, where City Manager Jack McGrory will give her a key to the city. She hasn’t played since she upset Steffi Graf to win the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona.
Other top players in the tournament are No. 8-ranked Conchita Martinez of Spain, No. 10 Anke Huber of Germany, No. 11 Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia, No. 13 Nathalie Tauziat of France, No. 19 Leila Meskhi of Russia and No. 24 Kimiko Date of Japan.
Saturday’s semifinals are scheduled to start at noon, with Sunday’s final set for 11 a.m.
