Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza shared the first-round lead at the PGA Junior Championship Wednesday after shooting one-over-par 73 at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Booth, a junior at Santa Margarita High, was tied with Jeong Min Park of Alameda after the first of three rounds. Booth finished third in the tournament last year; Park finished second.

Eunice Choi, a Laguna Hills junior, shot 74 and is tied for third.

The start of the tournament, which drew 46 boys and 47 girls, was delayed a day by Hurricane Andrew. Several contestants could not arrive until Tuesday, the day play was scheduled to begin. The first round was moved back one day to enable everyone the opportunity for a practice round. The event has been cut from 72 to 54 holes and will end Friday as scheduled.

Derek and Leland Sparks, former Mater Dei High football standouts now at Washington State, are both scheduled to undergo surgery within a week.

Derek Sparks, a running back who gained 259 yards in 58 carries last season for the Cougars, is scheduled for shoulder surgery. He sustained a dislocated shoulder during a practice Friday.

Rod Commons, WSU’s sports information director, said it is a “good possibility” that Sparks could miss the entire season.

Leland Sparks, a wide receiver and Derek’s cousin, is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Friday. Commons said there is a good chance Leland, a freshman, will return this season.

Scott Davis of Corona Del Mar and Mark Kaplan, a former UC Irvine standout, each won first-round matches Wednesday in the men’s U.S. Open tennis qualifying tournament at Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Davis defeated 13th-seeded Jan Apell of Sweden, 6-3, 6-4, and Kaplan eliminated Mihnea Nastase of Romania, 6-3, 6-4.
