Scott Davis of Corona del Mar defeated Mark Kaplan, a former UC Irvine standout, 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 6-1, in a final-round qualifying match to earn a spot in the main-draw of the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Davis, one of 16 qualifiers in the 128-player main draw, will face fellow qualifier Felipe Rivera of Chile, in a first-round match.
Qualifying also determined Michael Chang’s first-round opponent, Ellis Ferreira of South Africa, a 22-year-old who was a three-time collegiate All-American at Alabama and whose highest professional singles ranking entering this year was 490th.
Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach split two matches as the United States lost to Austria, 2-1, in the final of the boys’ 14-and-under division of the International Tennis Federation World Youth Cup at Tokyo.
Abrams teamed with Bob Bryan of Camarillo for a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Markus Hipfl and Clemens Trimmel. Hipfl defeated Abrams, 6-4, 6-0, in singles.
