COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Northridge Falls in Final of Volleyball Tournament

After knocking off ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara in the semifinals of the Gauchos’ volleyball tournament, the Cal State Northridge women lost to unranked Colorado State, 15-10, 15-8, 13-15, 18-6 in the championship match Saturday.

Nancy Nicholls, an all-tournament selection, had 21 kills to lead the Matadors (7-3) against Colorado State (7-1). Ana Kristich added 14.

The Matadors defeated host UC Santa Barbara, 15-5, 15-13, 7-15, 16-14, to reach the final.

In other volleyball matches:

Whittier tournament--Cal Lutheran finished sixth after dropping the fifth-place final to Mt. St. Mary’s, 16-14, 10-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-8. Darcy White earned all-tournament honors with 45 kills and eight service aces in three matches for Cal Lutheran (4-8).

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal State Dominguez 1, Cal Lutheran 0--Freshman midfielder Donovan Francis scored seven minutes into overtime to lift the Toros over Cal Lutheran at Dominguez Hills.

Dominguez Hills improved to 1-3; CLU dropped to 1-2-1.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal State Dominguez 4, Cal Lutheran 0--The Toros (3-1), ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II, scored three times in the first half and breezed to victory over visiting Cal Lutheran (1-2).

Junior midfielder Jennifer Womack opened the scoring after just six minutes of play, converting a free kick form 30 yards. Teresa Bateman added two first-half goals on assists from Womack.

The Toros outshot Cal Lutheran, 26-6, and goalkeeper Briana O’Dowd needed to make just one save to earn the shutout.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Cal State Fullerton Invitational--The host Titans blitzed the Cal State Northridge men’s team, scoring 19 points to the runner-up Matadors’ 58.

Northridge’s Sasha Vujic (24 minutes 47 seconds) finished third behind winner Mike Tansley (24:36) of Fullerton.

The Matador women finished fourth. Michelle Ishio was the team’s top finisher (12th) in 19:12.

WATER POLO

Citrus 10, Valley 8--The Owls scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to win the Ventura tournament championship at Ventura College.

Earlier in the day Valley won quarterfinal and semifinal matches from El Camino (15-5) and Chaffey (7-4), respectively.

Goalkeeper Ken Vudmaska recorded nine saves for Valley (4-1) in the finale and Steve Barran scored 14 goals in the tournament.
