SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Morningside High quarterback Stais Boseman sprained his left ankle on the third play of the game and was upstaged by Inglewood senior quarterback Leandrew Childs, who led the Sentinels to a 20-19 upset Saturday at Coleman Stadium in Inglewood.

Childs, a transfer from Leuzinger, rushed for 157 yards in 17 carries with one touchdown and passed for 61 yards and another TD.

Childs came through for the Sentinels on three fourth-down plays. In the first quarter, he ran 18 yards on fourth-and-four situation from the Monarch 33-yard line. In the second quarter, he scored the game’s first touchdown on a 26-yard run on fourth and six.

With Inglewood leading, 14-13, late in the third quarter, Childs ran seven yards on fourth and three from the Morningside 26. Three plays later, he threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Russell Shaw to give Inglewood a 20-13 lead.

“It was exciting,” Childs said. “We worked hard all summer to beat them. It’s something I just had to prove. I didn’t get to do what I wanted to do last year, so I came over here to get a chance to show what I can do.”

As a junior, Childs was Leuzinger’s leading rusher with 545 yards in 47 carries, averaging more than 11 yards a carry. But he transferred because he felt he wasn’t playing enough.

“I’m trying to go to college, I feel if I keep going like this I’ll be there next year,” Childs said. “I led the South Bay in yards per carry, but I just didn’t feel comfortable.”

Inglewood Coach Angelo Jackson had planned to use Childs at tailback and Donnie Richards at quarterback, but recently changed his mind. Richards played sparingly in relief of Childs on Saturday.

“I felt that (Childs) could give us another dimension,” Jackson said. “Because our line is very young, we knew if we got a lot of pressure he could get away from people. He’s very shifty.”

After his injury, Boseman never was able to fully recover. He did not play cornerback for part of the first half. At quarterback, he finished with 47 yards rushing in seven carries and completed only two of nine passes for 63 yards.

“(The ankle) got a little better, but I really couldn’t cut and I was slow coming out of the pass plays,” Boseman said. “My speed was about 70%. I did all right, but it really was a factor.”

Morningside Coach Ron Tatum said he was proud of the way Boseman handled his injury.

“(Boseman’s) a competitor, and he still hung in there even with the injury,” Tatum said. “We retaped it and he came in there the second half and gave us what he can do, that’s the kind of kid he is.”’

Jackson said he hopes the victory will boost student interest in the Inglewood football team, which had only 27 players in uniform.
