NOTEBOOK : Pasadena City College Still Touring California

After opening the season with a 20-17 victory at Fresno City College, the Pasadena City College football team travels to San Diego Mesa on Saturday.

“Anytime you win after getting on a bus, driving four hours and playing against a first-class program the same day, you have to be pleased,” Pasadena Coach Dennis Gossard said. “Our defense played tremendous.”

The Lancer offense was also impressive. Sophomore quarterback Edward Hervey completed 18 of 26 passes for 215 yards and also rushed for 71 yards.

Mesa lost to Rancho Santiago, 10-7, in its opener.

Pasadena plays six of its 10 games on the road this season.

Mark Swangle and Steve English, former swimmers at Mt. San Antonio College, were recently named junior college All-Americans for their performances at the state championships last spring in Long Beach.

Swangle, who is attending Columbia University, won the state title and ranked sixth nationally in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.94 seconds.

English won the state championship in the 200 butterfly in 1 minute 55.83 seconds, which ranked fourth nationally.

Don Dorkowski, an NFL official, will be the featured speaker Friday at the Pasadena Quarterback Club’s luncheon at Brookside Country Club.

The club, in its 48th year, is open to all with annual dues of $30. Lunch is $10 for members. $12 for guests.

USC Coach Larry Smith is the scheduled speaker for Sept. 25.

Anna Wlodarczyk, a former Olympic long jumper from Poland, has been hired as an assistant track coach at Pasadena City College.

Wlodarczyk, 41, finished fourth in the long jump at the 1980 Olympics at Moscow. She has coached part time at Pasadena and also trained athletes at Azusa Pacific.

The San Gabriel Volleyball Club will hold tryouts for boys’ teams in three divisions on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. at Pasadena City College.

Boys 14 and under, 16 and under and 18 and under are eligible to participate in the 2 1/2-month program, which is under the auspices of the United States Volleyball Assn.

A benefit golf tournament sponsored by the Arcadia Rotary Club will be held Oct. 14 at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino.

The $100 entry fee includes registration, green fees, cart, continental breakfast, lunch and dinner. Proceeds will be donated to the Lincoln Training Center, a nonprofit organization that provides work with pay for developmentally disabled adults in the San Gabriel Valley.

After reaching the semifinals of the girls’ division of the U.S. Open, Nicole Hummel of San Marino is planning to travel to Australia in November to compete in satellite tournaments.

Hummel, the 1991 Southern Section champion while playing for San Marino High, is now ranked 340th on the Virginia Slims professional rankings. She jumped 110 places after reaching the final round of the qualifying tournament for the Open’s main draw.

In the girls division, Hummel, who turned 18 Aug. 1, dropped only one set in winning her first four matches before losing Saturday to eighth-seeded Julie Steven, 6-4, 6-4. Hummel was seeded 14th.

“My ground strokes are basically my whole game and I did pretty well,” said Hummel, who was playing in her fourth Open. “I played in a lot of matches over the summer (mainly in U.S. Tennis Assn. satellite tour events, the sport’s version of the minor leagues) and was match tough.”

Losers of its first four football games of 1991, Pomona-Pitzer was able to open 1992 with victory, upsetting Cal Lutheran, 27-21, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at Cal Lutheran.

“We’re ecstatic that we’re able to defeat a team like Cal Lutheran,” said Pomona-Pitzer Coach Clarence Thomas, who called the victory the biggest in his 10 years at the school. The triumph raised his record to 18-67-1. “(This game) was an unbelievable challenge.”

As an NCAA Division III independent in 1991, the Kingsmen had won four of its five games against SCIAC opponents, but did not play the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer trailed, 14-7, at halftime but took control of the game by scoring touchdowns on three consecutive possessions in the second half.

There was no shortage of offensive heroes. Quarterback Josh Spitzen completed 11 of 16 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, with all but 24 yards coming in the second half. Spitzen also ran for a touchdown.

Robert Hicks was the game’s leading rusher with 85 yards, including a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Todd Tuney was Spitzen’s leading receiver, catching six passes for 105 yards, including a 25-yard catch which tied the score in the third quarter.

The Sagehens travel to Colorado College Saturday. The Tigers were a 17-13 winner when the two teams met last season.
