Cota Propels California to 17-14 Victory Over Fullerton
Quarterback Ernie Cota threw for one touchdown and ran for another as Whittier California held off Fullerton, 17-14, Friday night.
Cota, a junior, connected with Phil Lozano on the Condors’ first play from scrimmage for a 17-yard touchdown, then ran for a 57-yard score in the third quarter.
Fullerton junior Keith Ginter connected on a 62-yard scoring play to David Knight in the third quarter.
The Indians (0-2) tied the score on Ginter’s keeper from two yards out as the fourth quarter opened.
California (1-1) answered quickly and Ebbie Shelton clinched the victory with a 33-yard field goal with 7 minutes 56 seconds remaining.
Fullerton was led by a game-high 142 yards in 24 carries rushing from senior Manuel Saucedo.
The Indians finished the evening with 224 yards rushing, compared to California’s 140.
