COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Men Win Cross-Country Meet

The Anteater men won the “B” race and the women’s team placed third in the “A” race at the Nike/UC Irvine cross-country invitational Saturday at Irvine Park in Orange.

In the women’s “A” race, Traci Goodrich finished seventh as Irvine finished third with 110 points. Arkansas, which finished second in the nation last year, won the women’s “A” race with 38 points; Northern Arizona finished second with 54 points.

Cal State Fullerton’s Heather Killeen and Kristin Peters finished eighth and ninth to help the Titans finish fifth.

Arkansas’ Shelley Taylor, formerly of Edison High, finished fourth, covering the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes 55.70 seconds.

In the men’s “B” race, Irvine placed seven among the top fifteen, led by Mike Nielsen, who placed sixth and finished the 8,000-meter course in 27:44.2.

In the men’s “A” race, the Titans’ Mike Tansley finished seventh, helping Fullerton finish sixth. New Mexico won with 58 points and UCLA was second with 61 points. Fullerton had 131 points.

At the UCI water polo tournament:

Stanford 8, UC Irvine 4--Wolf Wigo scored four goals to lead the second-ranked Cardinal past third-ranked Irvine. Steve Gill scored two goals for Irvine, which tied the game, 3-3, with 6:04 remaining in the third quarter before Stanford scored three unanswered goals to pull away.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Nevada 3, UC Irvine 2--Host Nevada (3-7, 1-1 in conference) defeated UC Irvine (5-4, 0-2), 11-15, 15-4, 15-13, 6-15, 15-10. Irvine’s Popi Edwards had two blocks and a career-high 16 kills, and Kelly Martin had 26 kills for Nevada.
