ROUNDUP : Agoura’s Wilson Opens With Record

Ryan Wilson of Agoura High opened his senior season with a bang at the Woodbridge invitational cross-country meet Saturday in Irvine.

Wilson, the runner-up in the state Division II cross-country championships last year, timed 14 minutes 20 seconds over the three-mile course to win the senior race in his division at Woodbridge.

The time was a second faster than the course best, set by Agoura’s Bryan Dameworth in 1989.

Wilson’s teammate, Emanuel Azizi, finished sixth in 15:31.

Hoover’s Margarito Casillas won the Division I senior race in 14:33, the second-fastest time of the meet.

Sophomore Amy Skieresz (17:05), junior Kay Nekota (17:38) and senior Kristie Camp (18:00) of Agoura finished first, second and third in the girls’ Division II race to lead the Chargers to victory.

Agoura, the two-time defending Division I state champion, totaled 28 points, followed by El Toro with 128 and Newport Harbor with 139.

Junior Allison Kaz (sixth in 18:34) and senior Tiffany Burt (14th in 19:19) rounded out Agoura’s scoring runners.

In other cross-country meets:

Ojai Invitational--Sophomore Jaiver Ramirez and senior Karen Bockel of Nordhoff posted easy victories in the non-scoring meet at Lake Casitas.

Ramirez ran 16:18 over the three-mile course to finish 11 seconds ahead of junior teammate Micah Robles.

Bockel, a senior foreign-exchange student from Germany, timed 19:17 to win the girls’ race by 49 seconds.

In the large-school competition, senior Donald Carmona of Hueneme ran 16:03 to win the boys’ title with Rolando DeAngeles (16:14) of Buena and Rick Blackburn (16:17) of Saugus finishing second and third, respectively.

Gabriela Rodriguez of Oxnard won the girls’ large-school division, finishing in 19:28. Josephina Sanchez (19:57) of Hueneme was second and freshman Jamie Thomas (20:17) of Saugus third.

Clovis Invitational--Nick Rattray led the Oak Park contingent by finishing fifth in a time of 16:31. The Eagles finished ninth in the meet, which was held at Woodward Park in Fresno.

COLLEGE SOCCER

Fresno Pacific 3, The Master’s 2--Hector Alcaraz scored in the second half to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Sunbirds to a District 3 victory over the Mustangs in Fresno.

The Mustangs led, 2-1, in the first half on goals by Justin Roath and Adrian Donato.

The Master’s record dropped to 1-5, 1-1 in district play. Fresno Pacific is 4-1 and 1-0.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Mt. San Antonio College tournament--Valley College won twice before losing to eventual tournament champion De Anza, 14-5, to finish third.

The Monarchs (7-3) defeated Palomar, 7-5, and Citrus, 7-6, to reach the match with De Anza. Valley was bolstered by the scoring of Steve Barron, who scored five goals in each of the victories and three in the loss to De Anza.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Calabasas tournament--Santa Ynez (5-0) used six goals from holeman John Vadek to overwhelm Agoura, 14-9, in the championship match. Erik Edwards led Agoura (2-1) with four goals.

In other tournament matches:

Ventura 16, Calabasas 7--Josh Chinn sparked the attack with three goals and nine other players also scored as Ventura (2-1) defeated the host Coyotes (2-3) to place third.

Westlake 10, Nordhoff 9--Brad Abelson scored with five seconds left to give Westlake (3-1) its only lead of the game as the Warriors won the consolation championship. David Ford of Nordhoff (1-5) led all scorers with five goals while Dan Leiman had four for Westlake.

Notre Dame 25, Oxnard 2--Bobby Bodrogligeti scored five goals to pace the Knights (1-2) to a win in the seventh-place match. Oxnard fell to 0-3.
