Jara’s Goal Gives USD Soccer Victory in OT

Freshman forward Guillermo Jara scored his sixth goal in seven matches to lift the University of San Diego to a 2-1 overtime victory over Cleveland State in Friday’s first round of the Cleveland State Classic men’s soccer tournament in Ohio.

Jara’s unassisted goal from the right side of the net came with 2 minutes 31 seconds remaining in the second overtime and lifted the Toreros to 6-1 this season. Cleveland State is 2-3.

Including four assists, Jara now has 16 points this season.

Chugger Adair’s second-half goal off an assist from Kevin Legg sent the match into overtime.

Cleveland State had taken a 1-0 lead off a corner-kick goal from Robert McMillan early in the second half.

Tom Tate had five saves in goal for the Toreros.

Old Dominion shut out San Diego State, 3-0, in the first round of the MetLife Classic at Old Dominion. The Aztecs, who fell to 4-2-1, play William and Mary in today’s second round. Old Dominion (4-1-1) plays UCLA in the other match. UCLA and William and Mary played to a scoreless tie in Friday’s other match.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The University of San Diego had an easy time with North Texas, winning, 15-0-15-12, 15-5, in the opening round of the USD Invitational. Charlene Bippes and Jennifer Wrightson paced the Toreros with 10 kills apiece, and Nikki Wallace added nine.

Setter Shannon Mutch had all 40 of USD’s assists.

USD (8-5) plays both Brigham Young (5-3) and Cal State Northridge (9-5) in today’s final day of the tournament at the USD Sports Center. BYU downed CSUN, 15-13, 16-14, 15-11, earlier Friday.

San Diego State swept Loyola Marymount, 15-8, 15-11, 15-7, at Peterson Gym. Jennifer Miller had a match-high 21 kills and Stephanie Riley added 11 for the Aztecs (13-2). Loyola is 6-6.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated Azusa Pacific, 15-7, 13-15, 15-7, 10-15, 15-12, to improve to 7-3, 2-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Kacy Oakley and Sunday Renzema had 16 kills each, while Robin Rabello added 15. Azusa is 12-5, 2-1. The No. 5 Crusaders will travel to No. 9 Fresno Pacific tonight.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Nicole Benson scored the lone goal with 2:32 remaining to give Cal State Chico a 1-0 victory over San Diego State. Benson’s goal ruined an otherwise stellar defensive match for the Aztecs (2-4-1). Chico is 6-2-1.

SURFING

Terence McNulty of San Juan Capistrano emerged with the day’s best performance in the Body Gove Fall Classic at Seaside Reef in Cardiff, which unexpectedly got six- to eight-foot waves overnight.

McNulty had the best maneuvers on the big waves that came out of the northwest.
