Freshman Koy Detmer threw three second-half touchdown passes and linebacker Ron Woolfork tied a school record with five sacks to lead No. 10 Colorado past Iowa, 28-12, Saturday at Boulder, Colo.

Detmer, who rescued the Buffaloes (4-0) with two scoring passes in the second half of last week’s 21-20 comeback victory over Minnesota, replaced struggling Kordell Stewart at the start of the second half.

With 9:46 left in the third quarter, Detmer, the younger brother of 1990 Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer, sidestepped the rush and hit tight end Christian Fauria on a 10-yard touchdown throw to put Colorado ahead, 14-6.

Midway through the fourth quarter, he hooked up with wingback Michael Westbrook on a 31-yarder for a 21-12 lead. Although appearing to run out the clock, he capped the showing by going long to Charles Johnson for 74 yards with 3:59 remaining.

“You have to admire a young kid who comes in there on consecutive weeks and plays like he did,” Colorado Coach Bill McCartney said, adding he was not lost confidence in Stewart.

“He’s been impressive ever since he stepped on campus. He’s got a lot of poise and handles himself well.”

If the Buffaloes have a quarterback controversy, Detmer isn’t fueling it.

“I’m the No. 2 quarterback and Kordell is No. 1,” he said. “I’m happy with this role.”

Woolfork keyed a solid defensive effort that produced 10 sacks and limited the Hawkeyes (1-3) to two sustained drives.

Kansas State 35, Temple 14--Jaime Mendez intercepted a school-record four passes at Manhattan, Kan., to help the Wildcats to their first five-game winning streak in 58 years.

Kansas State (2-0) scored three touchdowns off Mendez’s interceptions, two in the first half as it took a 28-0 lead over the Owls (1-3).

The Wildcats’ two victories this year, combined with three at the end of last season, give them their longest winning streak since the 1934 team won its last five.

Mendez, a junior free safety, erased the Kansas State interception record set in 1949 and tied in 1986, and was one interception short of the Big Eight record.

Kansas State’s Eric Gallon, showing no sign of trouble from last spring’s reconstructive knee surgery, rushed 29 times for 134 yards.

Oklahoma State 24, Tulsa 19--Scott Harmon and Richie Ansley returned interceptions for touchdowns and the Cowboys held on to win a wild game in Stillwater, Okla.

The game ended with Tulsa at Oklahoma State’s seven-yard line. On the final play, backup quarterback Mark Matheson’s pass glanced off the hands of a leaping Gary Brown in the back right corner of the end zone.

Oklahoma State (2-1) is better than .500 for the first time since beginning the 1990 season with the same record. Tulsa (1-3) lost its third in a row.

Tulsa’s final drive started at its 35 with 2:48 remaining and no timeouts left. Matheson replaced injured Gus Frerotte with the Hurricanes facing third and nine at the 49, and Matheson promptly hit Brown on a 10-yard completion to keep the drive going.

Later, on fourth and 12 at the Oklahoma State 32, Matheson hit Marlo Fair on a 25-yard gain to the seven-yard line with 16 seconds left.

Matheson spiked the ball on first down, then threw three consecutive incompletions.
