COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College football team plays host to Los Angeles Southwest College Saturday after improving its record to 3-1 and 2-1 in the Western State Conference with a 41-16 upset victory over Bakersfield.

Bakersfield had entered the game ranked fourth in the state and 12th in the country. Bakersfield was averaging 407 yards and 35 points a game, but the Vaqueros limited the Renegades to 276 yards and came away with their first victory over Bakersfield since 1987.

“Sixty guys came together as one unit,” said Glendale quarterback Eric Kiesau, who completed 11 of 15 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns. “I’m a little surprised, but we’re getting better and better each week.”

Glendale’s victory was all the more impressive because it came largely without tailbacks Pathon Rucker and Leon Gable, who played sparingly because they missed practice the previous Monday. Rucker gained 54 yards in nine carries with a touchdown and Gable had one carry for an eight-yard touchdown.

Leon Jones gained 59 yards in 20 carries and Andy Cleland gained 38 yards in five carries for Glendale.

“We have some depth at the running back spot,” Glendale Coach John Cicuto said. “We’ve been pleased with our offense’s consistency. Our defense is surprising us. But that’s what we need if we are to have a chance at a divisional championship.”
