Interviewed after the debate by Times staff writers Shelby Grad, Mimi Ko and Mark Landsbaum

Shana Francis, 24, dental assistant, Costa Mesa: “I’m leaning more toward Clinton now. I’m not impressed with Bush. He’s the President here, not Somalia.”

Bill Nesbitt, 36, radio personality, Irvine: “Ross is more qualified for the job, but he doesn’t have a chance to get elected because of his selection for vice president.”

Daisy Wendcoss, 29, health spa manager, Calabasas: “I think Ross Perot is doing the best tonight--a lot of charisma--but the selling ticket for me is Clinton-Gore.”

Kent Weiss, 20, carpet repairman, Anaheim: “I don’t care for Clinton. He’s too much like a used-car salesman. I’m fully for Bush.”

Chris Boiko, 30, administrative assistant, Fullerton: “I would say Bush was weak, especially in getting in touch with the real people. . . . I think Clinton did the best. He was thorough, accurate and gave complete answers. Ross did extremely well.”

Kevin Jones, 26, retail manager, Anaheim Hills: “I still think all the candidates are just saying what they think the people want to hear. I don’t think they’re all telling the truth. They’re dancing around the issues, but I think Ross won this debate.”

Joel Samuel, 25, a bartender, of Costa Mesa: “I’m a recent college graduate, and I’d like to start a career but there isn’t anything available for people like me. Ross Perot seems to be . . . the only one actually addressing that problem.”

Mark Pineda, 30, store manager, Los Angeles: “I think they should have started this (debating) a lot sooner. But they’re still not getting down to the meat and potatoes. What I’m concerned about is whether I’ll be able to put food on my table, not who went to Vietnam.”

Juan Luo, 18, fast-food restaurant employee, Santa Ana: “I think they should do something about the economy. My mom gets laid off a lot and there’s no more driver’s ed classes in schools because of the budget cuts.”

Terri Boehnlein, 29, unemployed, no city: “After watching the debates, I’m a lot more interested in Perot than I was before. He’s got my attention.”

Chris Johnson, 33, stockbroker, Costa Mesa: “He’s (Bush) a little wishy-washy. I’m voting for Clinton. He’s going to win. It doesn’t matter who the President is; Congress runs the country. (But) I think Clinton and Gore can make a difference.”

Mark Schoeman, 30, architect, Pomona: “I’m not going to reelect Bush. I don’t think Perot belongs in office and that leaves Clinton, the lesser of three evils.”

Michelle Connor, 20, college student, Irvine: “I thought this was better than Sunday. It wasn’t as heated . . . They talked more calmly. I think it was good they had regular people asking questions. That way, the answers were more honest. They couldn’t avoid the question.”

Jerry Guerin, 45, carpenter, Costa Mesa: “I liked the format. . . . It looked to me like Ross Perot won again. I wouldn’t trust George, anything he says . . . and Clinton’s too much of an actor. I really like Ross, but I don’t know that I’m going to vote for him.”

Austin Chiles, 48, real estate broker, Huntington Beach: “You can put me down as a voter for Mr. Bush. . . . If Mr. Perot could win I’d probably vote for Mr. Perot. I don’t think he can win. I don’t care for his increase in taxation. . . . I think this was a much better debate than . . . the last one, to let these men get up and do a little bit of ad-libbing and speaking spontaneously without a bunch of reporters badgering them.”

Tom Scaglione, 52, salesman, Tustin: “I like the format a lot more than the last debate. Of course I’m a Clinton supporter, so it’s hard for me to be unbiased. . . . I think they are a little more relaxed, and I like the questions coming from the people instead of the news media who seem to be in control of everything all the time anyway.”

Jason Stone, 21, a part-time disc jockey and liquor store clerk, Anaheim: “Bush is the only one to go, that’s the way it is. I believe everybody else is just out there for money. Oh my, it’s dirty out there. May as well stick with Bush.”

Jane Scott, 44, accountant, Anaheim: “I thought that Clinton was best with the economy. He had a clear plan for what he was talking about and backed up what he said . . . with specifics. . . . I want to see something done that can get the country moving. We’re in a rut. I think Clinton had some good things to say about colleges and investing money into the economy.”
