Azusa : City Joins With Developer
The City Council voted 3 to 2 to adopt a resolution approving an exclusive negotiation agreement between the city and Harlan Lee and Associates for the development of a 5.4-acre site at the northwest corner of Foothill Boulevard and San Gabriel Avenue.
The firm proposes to develop the site, which has been vacant for five years, into 43 single-family homes for first-time buyers. Prices of homes in the project, which would be completed in three phases, would start at $153,000.
Negotiations will be open for 45 days. The final terms and conditions must be approved by the city’s Board of Directors after a public hearing.
The site, owned by the city Redevelopment Agency, has been slated for several failed projects--the most recent, terminated in July, 1992, being senior citizens housing.
Mayor Eugene Moses and Councilman Stephen Alexander voted against the resolution. Alexander described the project as “ill-conceived” and suggested giving the land to Azusa residents rather than to a developer.
