Margarito Casillas of Hoover stayed on course for a Southern Section cross-country championship and the Crescenta Valley boys’ team positioned itself for a Pacific League title with impressive performances last week.

Casillas, a senior, won the Division I race at the Santa Clarita Invitational at College of the Canyons, covering the three-mile course in 15 minutes 21 seconds. It was Casillas’ seventh consecutive victory.

Crescenta Valley defeated Pasadena in a Pacific League dual meet to improve its record to 4-0. Terry Ghiselli was the individual winner in 16:29.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College football team begins divisional play in the Western State Conference on Saturday when the Vaqueros meet Santa Barbara.

Glendale improved to 4-1 and 3-1 in the conference last week by defeating Los Angeles Southwest, 35-6.

Glendale’s defense, which was outstanding in a 41-16 upset over Bakersfield on Oct. 10., had another stellar performance against Southwest, limiting the Cougars to 100 yards and four first downs.

Pathon Rucker gained 111 yards in 24 carries and Leon Gable added 89 yards in 11 carries for Glendale, which rolled up 480 yards in winning its third consecutive game.

Glendale quarterback Eric Kiesau completed 12 of 18 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns.

Other Glendale College athletic events this week:

* The Vaquero men’s and women’s cross-country teams travel to College of the Canyons on Friday for a Western State Conference race.

* The women’s volleyball team plays host to Pierce on Friday and Cuesta on Tuesday.

* The men’s soccer team plays Santa Monica on Friday at the Griffith Park soccer complex. The Vaqueros travel to Moorpark on Tuesday.

COLLEGES

The Occidental football team takes a 2-1 record in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play into its nonconference game Saturday at the University of San Diego.

Occidental is coming off a 17-14 overtime defeat to Cal Lutheran that dropped the Tigers into second place in the SCIAC behind unbeaten La Verne and Redlands.

Occidental, which entered the Cal Lutheran game ranked first in the seven-team SCIAC in defense, has fallen to third. The Tigers are giving up 298.2 yards a game. Occidental is fifth in offense, averaging 333 yards a game.

The Occidental men’s and women’s cross-country teams swept the top places at an eight-way SCIAC meet Saturday at La Mirada Park.

Occidental’s Jose Garcia, who finished in 25 minutes 54 seconds, Konstantine Kindrich (26:14) and Will Allan (26:46) were the top three finishers in the men’s race.

Occidental’s Becky Kopchick (19:26), Arcelia Gomez (19:26), Kelly Dearborn (19:53) and Alexis Kays (20:09) were the top four women’s finishers.

Occidental will participate in the SCIAC championships Oct. 31. The winner of the conference will be determined by combining the results of the eight-way meet and the championships.

The Occidental women’s volleyball team began the week tied with Redlands for first place in the SCIAC.

Occidental, under first-year Coach Jeff Campbell, improved to 12-3 and 5-1 in the SCIAC with a victory last week over Cal Lutheran.

Occidental plays host to Pomona Pitzer on Friday and Claremont on Saturday.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Tiffany Neumeier, La Canada--Neumeier, a junior, had nine kills for the Spartan volleyball team in a Rio Hondo League sweep of Monrovia.

Neumeier helped La Canada enter the week with a 6-2 record. The Spartans are 4-0 in league play.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Eric Kiesau, Glendale--Kiesau, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound sophomore quarterback, completed 12 of 18 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns in the Vaqueros’ 35-6 victory over Southwest.

Kiesau completed eight of his first 10 passes. He threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Keith West in the first quarter and passed 13 yards to Troy Aldrich for a touchdown in the third quarter.
