Outside linebacker Ivy Calvin of Cal State Northridge has been named the Western Football Conference defensive player of the week, the first time this season a Matador player has been honored by the WFC.

Calvin, a junior transfer from Bakersfield City College, blocked an extra-point attempt, had one sack and a quarterback hurry, and made 11 tackles (eight solo) in Northridge’s 42-18 win over Santa Clara. Calvin has a team-high 196 defensive points and is second in tackles with 58.

Quarterback Bobby Fresques, who completed 20 of 30 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns in Cal State Sacramento’s 24-0 win at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, was the WFC offensive player of the week.

Fresques beat out Northridge’s Jamal Farmer, who earned Matador offensive player-of-the-week honors after gaining 208 yards in 19 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Farmer also completed a 37-yard pass, setting up Northridge’s first touchdown.

The Matador defensive player of the week was inside linebacker Jose Aguilar. The junior transfer from Pasadena City College made seven tackles (five solo), sack for a five-yard loss and a fumble recovery.

Calvin was Northridge’s special teams player of the week.

In other Northridge football developments, center Greg Sorensen has contracted a viral infection that could keep him out of Saturday’s game against visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. If Sorensen cannot play, guard Brian Hay, who has missed the past two games with knee and Achilles’ tendon injuries, would replace him.

Valley College’s Howard Blackwell and Jon Bodemer, both of whom played for Hart High, have been named Western State Conference co-offensive and co-defensive players of the week.

Blackwell, a 5-foot-10, 188-pound sophomore, shared his honor with Pierce kicker Fernando Garcia. Blackwell rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns in 20 carries in the Monarchs’ 41-24 victory over Ventura on Saturday.

Bodemer, a 5-11, 191-pound sophomore defensive back, had 14 tackles (10 unassisted) and broke up two passes against Ventura.

Garcia, a sophomore from Faith Baptist, kicked three field goals and four extra points in the Brahmas’ 40-9 victory against Compton. Garcia also punted four times for an average of 41.0 yards.

Moorpark and Glendale colleges are neck and neck in this week’s JC Athletic Bureau football poll.

Moorpark (4-0-1) dropped from sixth to 16th after a 10-10 tie with Bakersfield. Glendale (4-1), winner of three in a row, cracked the state top 20 for the first time, debuting at No. 17.

Harbor (5-0), which leads Moorpark and Glendale in the Western State Conference’s Northern Division, remains unranked.

Dawn Krenik and Nancy Nicholls, seniors on the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team, were selected to the all-tournament team at the New Mexico tournament this past weekend.

Krenik, a 5-7 outside hitter from Agoura High, had 26 kills, 19 digs and nine service aces to help Northridge (17-7) finish second in the four-team tournament behind the host Lobos.

Nicholls, a 6-0 middle blocker from Cleveland High, had 25 kills, 21 digs and 12 assisted blocks for the Matadors, who have won seven of their past eight matches.

The Hart High boys’ cross-country team has remained No. 1 in The Harrier magazine’s national poll, but the Agoura girls have slipped to second after placing third in the Kenny Staub invitational at Crescenta Valley Park on Oct. 10.

Bend (Ore.) High, which romped to an 18-54 victory over Peninsula in the Stanford invitational earlier this month, is ranked No. 1.

Agoura, minus two of its top five runners, finished third in the Staub meet behind Peninsula and Belmont, the three-time defending City Section champion.
