Nebraska Wins but Missouri Doesn’t Just Roll Over, 34-24

Freshman quarterback Tommie Frazier ran for three touchdowns as eighth-ranked Nebraska overcame Jeff Handy’s second consecutive 400-yard passing game to beat Missouri, 34-24, Saturday.

Frazier scored on runs of one and three yards to give the Cornhuskers a 14-0 lead. After Missouri closed to within 27-24, Frazier scored on a five-yard run with 2:09 left.

Nebraska, 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big Eight, has beaten Missouri (1-6, 0-3) in 14 consecutive games, but this was one of the closest calls in the streak. In the previous three meetings, Nebraska outscored Missouri, 182-34, including a 63-6 rout at Lincoln, Neb., last season.

Handy completed 29 of 44 passes for 424 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Last week, in his first college start, he threw a Big Eight-record 73 passes and completed 43 for 480 yards, tying a conference mark.

Missouri scored its most points against Nebraska since 1978, when it last beat the Cornhuskers, 35-31. Handy had 245 of his yards in the first half, topping the school’s best passing day against Nebraska set by Phil Bradley with 229 yards in 1980.

The Tigers were held to 22 yards rushing in 22 carries.
