School: Woodbridge High

Sport: Football

Position: Linebacker

Class: Sophomore

A sophomore rarely has as much influence on a high school football game as Ian Dominelli did Saturday for Woodbridge in a 3-0 upset of Tustin. But what makes Dominelli’s 17 tackles and key interception more remarkable is that he was playing in only his second varsity game. Until two weeks ago, Dominelli was a running back/linebacker on the sophomore team, biding his time until he turned 15, the CIF’s minimum age for football. After joining the Warriors the week of his 15th birthday, he made 13 tackles in an 18-7 loss to Newport Harbor. Saturday, his fourth-quarter interception led to the only scoring drive of the game, which was Woodbridge’s first league victory. At 5 feet 11, 180 pounds, Dominelli isn’t an intimidating presence on the field, but he’s effective. “I got knocked around on a couple of plays because I’m not as big as they are,” Dominelli said. “I guess I’m quicker than they are to the ball.” Dominelli also won familial bragging rights Saturday--his father, Jeff, is an assistant coach for Tustin.

Other top performers:

Marshall Brown, who accounted for five touchdowns in Rancho Alamitos’ 49-6 victory over Santiago. Brown ran for two touchdowns, passed for two more and returned an interception 61 yards for another.

Fredrico Duran, who won the Sunset League individual cross-country title by finishing a three-mile course at Central Park in 15 minutes 34 seconds and helped Santa Ana win the team title.
