Fountain Valley Beats Westminster, Loses Flip

Scott Bertoni passed for 159 yards and two touchdowns, and Mark Zimke caught two touchdown passes to lead Fountain Valley to a 27-12 Sunset League victory over Westminster Friday at Westminster High School.

With the victory, the Barons (6-3-1, 5-1-1 in league) tied Marina for second place behind league champion Servite. But Marina will enter the Southern Section Division II playoffs as the league’s second-seeded team after winning a coin flip Friday morning.

Fountain Valley held a 7-0 lead at halftime, but after Westminster scored on its first possession of the third quarter, the Barons rallied for three touchdowns to put the game away. Zimke caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Bertoni and also caught a 13-yard scoring pass from reserve quarterback Sean Fortner.

Bertoni completed 11 of 21 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns, including a 31-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Gail.

Westminster’s Gary Frazier scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 1 minute 29 seconds remaining.

Quarterback Johnny Mahurien completed 16 of 35 passes for 224 yards with two interceptions for Westminster (3-7, 1-6).
