ROUNDUP : Van Nuys to Play in Volleyball Final

Jenna Panatier had 15 kills to lead Van Nuys High past Birmingham and into the City Section 3-A Division volleyball championship match.

The game scores were 15-5, 15-3, 15-9.

The Wolves (14-1) will meet Marshall on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Cal State Northridge.

In other volleyball playoffs:

Saugus d. Arroyo Grande 15-13, 14-16, 15-4, 13-15, 15-12--Five players each had 10 or more kills to pace the Centurions to a quarterfinal victory in a Southern Section Division III match.

The teams were tied, 11-11, in the deciding game, before Saugus pulled away. Lindsay Estes led the second-seeded Centurions (15-2) with 23 kills and teammate Kezban Yagmur added 19.

Laura Wagoner and Amy Gillis each recorded 11 kills and Jennifer Luby had 10. Arroyo Grande, seeded fifth, finished 15-2.

Nordhoff d. Carpinteria, 15-3, 15-2, 15-8--Sami Sawyer had nine kills and 27 assists and Julie Sandefur added 46 assists and served for 12 points to lead the Rangers in a Division IV quarterfinal match.

Alison Nofrey had 11 kills for top-ranked Nordhoff (19-3). The Warriors finished the season 13-6.

Fountain Valley d. Harvard-Westlake, 15-10, 15-12, 15-6--Laura Wolf had 14 kills and Lindsay Powers had 25 assists, but Westlake (14-5) was upended by host Fountain Valley (13-6) in a Division II quarterfinal.

L.A. Baptist d. Whittier Christian 15-10, 15-10, 15-9--Sarah Rameson led the visiting Knights with 19 kills, five aces and three blocks. Teammate Jill De Ruyter added 30 assists in the Southern Section Division V quarterfinal match.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

Quartz Hill 12, Righetti 6--The Rebels’ doubles team of Cheaza Figueroa and Praveena Dharma swept its three matches in a Southern Section Division IV quarterfinal match at Righetti.

Harvard-Westlake d. El Dorado, 12-6--The Wolverines’ Lindsay Wasserman won all three of her singles matches in a Southern Section Division III quarterfinal at El Dorado.

Laguna Beach 13, Calabasas 5--Kirsten Gross won two of three singles matches but that was not enough to lift the unseeded and inexperienced Coyotes past the top-ranked Artists in a Division II quarterfinal match.

Calabasas finished the season 13-6. Laguna Beach is 21-1.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

L.A. Trade Tech 64, Oxnard 58--Terry Green scored 21 points to lead L.A. Trade Tech (2-1) in a nonconference game at Oxnard. Guard Lance Fay led Oxnard in scoring with 17 points.

Oxnard (2-1) trailed by 11 points with 7 minutes 35 seconds to play, then cut the margin to three. But the Condors turned the ball over and L.A. Trade Tech converted the mistake into a score, putting the game away.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

L.A. Valley 63, Chaffey 54--Reserves Michelle Cabaldon and Tameka Evans sparked the Monarchs’ nonconference win at Chaffey (1-2).

Cabaldon had 11 points and eight rebounds and Evans, a freshman, scored a team-high 12 points for Valley (3-0). Pam Starks grabbed 10 rebounds.
