Harvard to Face El Toro for Water Polo Title

Share

Harvard-Westlake High will seek its third Southern Section water polo title in five years when the Wolverines meet El Toro for the Division I championship tonight at 8:15 at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

The Wolverines (28-2) won the Division III title in 1988 and the Division II championship in 1991 and have qualified for four finals in seven seasons. In the semifinals of the Sunny Hills tournament last month, El Toro (27-1) defeated Harvard, 12-11.

“We definitely are the underdog,” Wolverine Coach Rich Corso said. “There is no pressure on us.”

Corso said defensive intensity will be the key to stopping a balanced El Toro attack.

Harvard beat Corona del Mar, 10-7, in Friday’s semifinal behind six goals by senior All-American Jim Toring. Harvard also features senior All-Americans in Alan Paul, Ryan Salceda and Lance Weidner.
