A man who stepped in front of a car on Interstate 5 near El Toro Road was killed instantly early Monday, a CHP official said.

The accident, which occurred at 4:10 a.m., forced authorities to close three lanes of the northbound freeway for more than three hours, CHP Officer Bruce Lian said.

The name of the victim is not known.

The driver of the car, James W. Johnson, 31, of Seattle, was northbound on the freeway when suddenly a body crashed through the front windshield of his 1990 Nissan Maxima, officials said.

“The impact was so great it broke the steering column and both the back and front windshields,” Lian said.

Johnson suffered a broken hand and numerous cuts and bruises and was listed in fair condition at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Wendy Harle said.

Lian said investigators are looking for witnesses to the accident. Anyone with information is asked to call (714) 661-6215.
