ROUNDUP : Carter Leads Antelope Valley

Akili Carter and Darnell Cherry combined for 44 points to lead Antelope Valley College to a 95-81 victory over Cerro Coso in a men’s nonconference basketball game at Antelope Valley on Tuesday.

Carter, a freshman guard from Crenshaw High, hit eight of 14 attempts from the field to lead all scorers with 23 points. Cherry was nine of 18 for 21 points. He also had 10 rebounds.

The Marauders (6-1) ran to a 50-26 halftime lead and were not challenged.

Jermaine Scott led the Coyotes (3-6) with 18 points and Tyrome Finney scored 17 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Alemany 67, Granada Hills 47--Doug Tait scored 13 points to lead five players in double figures for Alemany in an opening-round game of the Simi Valley tournament. David Winner, Mark Guziel and Chris Walker scored 11 points. Chris Bello scored 10.

Simi Valley 84, Littlerock 52--Jeff Barlow scored 12 of his 22 points and Ryan Briggs scored 10 of his 16 as part of a 30-6 third quarter that helped the Pioneers (1-0) to a first-round victory in the Simi Valley tournament.

Thousand Oaks 74, Taft 48--Twins Nick and Paul Foster (19 and 17 points) spearheaded the Lancers’ rout in a first-round game of the Simi Valley tournament.

North Hollywood 72, Santa Barbara 62--Arthur Lee and F.J. Johnson each had 18 points for the Huskies (2-0) and Damon Ollie added 16 in a first-round game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Santa Clara 61, Rio Mesa 49--Brian Clark scored 24 and Dave Varela posted 16 to lead the host Saints (1-0) to a first-round victory in the Simi Valley tournament.

Palmdale 62, Royal 51-- Mike Lauricella scored a game-high 19 points to lead Palmdale in a first-round game of the Simi Valley tournament.

El Camino Real 98, Van Nuys 72--Senior forward Markee Brown scored 44 points and added a team-high eight rebounds to lead the visiting Conquistadores in a nonleague game. Teammates Charles Adams (24 points) and Kenyth Henry (15) also scored in double figures.

Cesar Felici scored 22 points to lead Van Nuys. Brown scored 30 points in the Conquistadores’ opener last week.

Notre Dame 55, Los Amigos 35--Senior swingman Monte Marcaccini led all scorers with 15 points and added 10 rebounds in a first-round game of the Savanna-Western tournament at Western High in Anaheim.

Harvard-Westlake 82, Salesian 58--The Wolverines bench ignited a run early in the second quarter of Harvard-Westlake’s first-round victory in the Faith Baptist tournament.

Birmingham 44, Poly 27--Greg Whiteside (17) and Raffi Kassabian (13) each scored in double figures for Birmingham (4-1, 1-0) at Poly (0-2, 0-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Monroe 72, Grant 53--Tweedy Steiner had 29 for Monroe (2-0, 1-0 in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Grant (1-1, 0-1).

Verdugo Hills 55, Hollywood 44--Eddie Powell scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the visiting Dons to a Northwest Valley Conference win. Powell is averaging 27.0 points this season.

Providence 87, South Bay Lutheran 73--Senior forward Barry Dabbaghian scored a personal-high 41 points to lead Providence to a nonleague victory.
