Orange : Marijuana History Is Chapman Topic

Share

The history and uses of marijuana will be discussed today at a Chapman University forum.

“We’re doing this mostly as a public service,” said Bernard McGrane, an assistant professor of sociology at Chapman and the organizer of the conference. “I think it’s going to be quite exciting. We are having a wide variety of perspectives represented.”

Representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice, Help End Marijuana Prohibition (HEMP), the Business Alliance for Commerce and Hemp, several Chapman professors and two recovering addicts will be among those making presentations during the three-hour discussion.

McGrane said he expects the topic of whether or not to legalize marijuana to draw a lot of attention.

“For 10 years college and high school students have had it drummed into them to just say no to drugs, and I imagine there is a lot of anti-drug feeling among them,” he said. “I’m sure it will be quite an emotional debate.”

Questions from the audience will be taken.

The forum is scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium on the Chapman campus, 333 N. Glassell St. There is a $3 admission fee.
