PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Graddy Almost Ready to Play

The Raiders are considering activating wide receiver Sam Graddy for Sunday’s game at the Coliseum against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Graddy, who has been out 10 weeks because of a broken arm, has been practicing the last two days.

“He’s looked pretty good,” Coach Art Shell said. “He’s catching the ball with his hands again instead of (his chest).”

Should Graddy be activated, someone on the 47-man roster would have to go. The likely candidates are seldom-used receiver Mervyn Fernandez and defensive lineman Bob Golic, who has not been activated in several weeks.

Graddy got hurt against the Chiefs.

Reaching down to catch a pass, Graddy was hit by defensive back Martin Bayless, whose helmet shattered Graddy’s right wrist.

It has been a slow road to recovery for Graddy, who had a metal plate surgically placed in his right arm and still has numbness in the right thumb.

“I’ve jumped right back in where I left off,” Graddy said. “I feel real comfortable and my legs feel good. What they want to see now is what kind of contact I can take.”

Graddy caught 10 passes, one for a touchdown, in four games before getting hurt, averaging a team-leading 20.5 yards per catch.
