Perhaps no team in the league has more high-flying, slam-dunking, three-point-shooting, running-and-gunning athletes than Magnolia. But will they be enough to win? They did last summer. The Sentinels struggled with academic eligibility and internal problems last season but regrouped to finish 21-2 during the summer. “I can’t hide this team any longer,” Walin said. “Everyone saw them this summer. We had a great summer, the best since I’ve been here.” Walin considers this one of his best teams in 17 years at the school. The Sentinels haven’t won the league title since 1987, but they appear to have a great shot. Martin, a Mater Dei transfer, could develop into a solid point guard. Henderson plays outstanding defense. Williams is one of the county’s better offensive players. Hearvey runs the floor as well as anyone his size. Maltie, an all-league player last season, is strong and physical for his size and can handle centers taller than he is. “We’re the favorite (in league),” Walin said. “The players know that if they play the way they did this summer, they’ll get the recognition. The pressure’s on them.”
