OUTLOOK

Here’s another team that figures to battle for third place. Travers, like every other league coach, picks Mater Dei and Capistrano for the top spots. And he thinks Mission Viejo has the inside track for third place. Two starters and four lettermen are back from last season’s third-place team, but Travers calls the Chargers an “unknown quantity.” Inexperience might be the biggest stumbling block El Toro faces this season. Coming off a 5-14 summer-league record, Travers is still looking for a standout to lead the team. One bit of good news concerns Ver Wayne, who sat out the 1991-92 season with a back ailment. He’s returned to full strength and gives the Chargers some needed size in the paint. He’s also one of the county’s top pitchers. Rikimaru, who averaged 5.8 points and 4.3 assists, and Bone, who averaged 5.1 points, were starters last season. Lewis (3.1 points) moves into a starting role after coming off the bench last season. Culligan, a standout on the Charger junior varsity, also will be counted on to contribute this season.
