Newbury Park Duo Airing Their Basketball Skills

The Newbury Park High basketball team’s leading scorers after three games are juniors Keith Smith and Leodes Van Buren--the same tandem that led the Panthers to the Marmonte League football title.

Smith, who passed for a Ventura County-record 3,318 yards this season, has scored 52 points--including a team-high 20 against Santa Maria--as the team’s point guard. Van Buren, who finished with 79 receptions to rank second in the state, has scored 39 points in three games at power forward.

Basketball: Through his first four games, Notre Dame swingman Monte Marcaccini, who has signed to play for Indiana, was averaging 14.7 points, 5.7 assists and 12.2 rebounds a game. . . . Bell-Jeff junior point guard Wally Moscoso had 27 assists in his first three varsity games. . . . Monroe senior guard LaMarco Rich is averaging 12.3 assists.

Girls’ basketball: Notre Dame forward Valery Brady and guard Sharon Marciniak each had personal highs in points last week in the Faith Baptist tournament. Brady scored 24 points in a 61-50 final-round loss to St. Genevieve. Marciniak posted 20 in a first-round win over Chatsworth. . . St. Bonaventure beat Santa Clara for the first time in school history last week, with Denice Babby scoring 28 points and adding 10 steals.

Volleyball: A balanced attack proved one of the keys to Nordhoff’s drive to a state Division IV title. In the Rangers’ semifinal and final last week against Oakhurst Yosemite and Forestville El Molino, Alison Nofrey had 34 kills. Sami Sawyer added 28 followed by Allison Kerr with 27 and Jami Sawyer with 19.
