A man was struck and killed by a passenger train Saturday night, police said.

The 40-year-old man, whose identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was struck shortly after 8 p.m. by a southbound Amtrak train between Avenida Pico and Camino Capistrano, said Sgt. Russ Moore. Police said the man was a transient.

The train’s conductor saw the man walking along the tracks and sounded a horn. The man looked up at the train but did not move away from the tracks, Moore said.

“We don’t know if he was under the influence (of drugs) or what,” Moore said. Police are waiting for the county coroner’s office to complete an autopsy on the man before they try to determine whether the death was an accident or suicide.
