The Philadelphia Eagles overcame 17 penalties and 10 sacks of Randall Cunningham.

The Seattle Seahawks couldn’t overcome another dismal day by their offense.

Despite being penalized a club-record 191 yards on Sunday, the Eagles managed to beat the Seahawks, 20-17, on Roger Ruzek’s 44-yard field goal as time expired in overtime.

“The most important thing is we now have nine wins,” Philadelphia Coach Rich Kotite said. “Randall made some key throws when it counted and our defense was magnificent.”

The Seahawks (2-12) managed only 87 yards and have scored a league-low 120 points.

The Eagles (9-5) improved their playoff hopes by overcoming a 17-10 deficit late in the fourth quarter.

Herschel Walker, who gained 111 yards in 23 carries, scored on an eight-yard touchdown run with 4:52 left in regulation to tie the score.

In overtime, Cunningham flipped a 21-yard shovel pass to Keith Byars to get the ball to Seattle’s 29. The Eagles drove 53 yards in eight plays in 2:55 to position Ruzek for the game-winning field goal.

“In crucial situations, I just tell Keith to find an open spot and I try to find him,” Cunningham said. “This time I did.”

Tackle Cortez Kennedy, Seattle’s top defensive player, was standing on the sidelines with a rib injury when Philadelphia drove for its overtime field goal. Kennedy had seven tackles, two sacks and batted away two passes.

The Eagles rolled up 466 yards but had to go down to the wire to beat the Seahawks, who went to overtime for the second time in three games.

“We had our chances but, as usual, we didn’t make the plays,” Seahawk Coach Tom Flores said. “As I’ve said before, there are no moral victories.”

Cunningham completed 27 of 44 passes for 365 yards with one interception. He also ran four yards for a touchdown.

Seattle’s Stan Gelbaugh completed only nine of 31 passes for 66 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.

The Eagles sent the game into overtime by driving 93 yards in nine plays, capped by Walker’s run. The key play was a fourth-and-two pass from Cunningham to Vai Sikahema to the Seattle eight.

The Seahawks went ahead, 17-10, 90 seconds into the fourth quarter when cornerback Dwayne Harper returned Cunningham’s fumble 52 yards for a touchdown.
