Hoffman was a highly successful coach at Western High for nine seasons, where he posted a 130-78 record and his teams won or shared the last three Orange League titles. Hoffman now faces the challenge of trying to win in one of the county’s most competitive and successful leagues. The big question is: Will Hoffman’s coaching style work at Marina? The fiery coach met with school administrators and parents after a couple players complained about his coaching methods over the summer. Things appear to have been smoothed out as Marina performed well in the Daily Pilot Tipoff Classic. “We have a lot of kids in a new system, and I’m pleased with our defensive effort,” Hoffman said. “We’ll be a lot better in February than we are now.” The Vikings allowed an average of 54 points in four tournament games but Nieto, Sullivan and Keim made only 33% of their shots. Keim, the best three-point shooter in the county, had six three-pointers in the Vikings’ opener but hit only two in his next three games. Two freshmen--Kai Boyd and Chase--will play extensively and Hoffman is high on Endsley, a junior.
