Westminster managed to match its 1991-92 victory total of seven last year in Underwood’s first season, but there was a significant change in the Lions’ attitude on the court. Underwood may have won only two league games, but he has instilled a winning attitude that carried over into the summer when the Lions won 20 games. Unfortunately, two players who were expected to start, guard Brian Mann and forward Bill Vorhees, transferred before school began. Mann is now at Huntington Beach and Vorhees moved to Tucson, Ariz., where he finished ninth in the State cross-country championships two weeks ago. Madland, a three-year varsity member, represents Westminster’s only size. He fouled out in four of the Lions’ opening five games. The Lions will rely on the three-point shot. They’ve averaged five per game with Okura emerging as their best long-distance shooter. “We’ll live or die with three-point shots,” Underwood said. “Madland is our only player with size, but we have some quickness.” Westminster opened the season with an upset over Estancia that Underwood said, “probably fired up the kids too much and we lost our next four games.” Westminster beat San Gabriel, 76-66, in a Division I-AA qualifying game last year.
