OUTLOOK

Although the Spartans have won only 27 of 100 games in the last five seasons, Villa Park is the league’s dark horse after finishing fourth last season. “We’re going to challenge some people,” Whitacre said. “They won’t expect much from us because Villa Park’s been such a poor program recently.” Whitacre, who coached the girls’ JV team at Capistrano Valley last season, installed an aggressive pressure defense and transition offense to help Villa Park finish 9-3 in the Sonora summer league. “We didn’t lose any game by more than three points over the summer,” Whitacre said. Earl is the Spartans’ top returner, after averaging 15 points while earning honorable mention all-league last season. Skehan, a transfer from Illinois, could make the Spartans a title contender. Skehan averaged 18 points and 15 rebounds in Villa Park’s first two games, victories over Anaheim and Norwalk Glenn. “She’s definitely performed better than we thought she would,” Whitacre said.
