Huntington Beach’s basketball team combined hot shooting with a balanced attack for a 74-50 victory over Pasadena Tuesday night in the first round of the Tournament of Champions at Ocean View High.

Huntington Beach’s five starters scored in double figures before Coach Roy Miller cleared his bench with three minutes remaining and the Oilers leading, 67-40.

What’s more, Huntington Beach (4-1) made 26 of 42 field goal attempts, including its first seven shots while taking a 19-7 lead. The Oilers were nine of 11 from the field in the first quarter, and never looked back.

“This was probably our best game, but believe it or not, we’re still better than that,” Miller said. “I think (point guard) Bryan Chang is doing a much better job this year of penetrating and then dishing off for high-percentage shots.

“All of the players seemed to complement each other well tonight. I was very pleased with the way everyone played.”

Guard Tommy Walden and center Tony Gonzalez each finished with 15 points. Walden seemed to benefit most from Chang’s play, making three of four three-point attempts.

Gonzalez entertained the fans in the second half with three dunks, including one off an alley-oop pass from Chang early in the fourth quarter.

Pasadena (4-3) trailed by only six points, 42-36, late in the third quarter when Huntington Beach went on a 15-0 scoring run. Gonzalez ended the run with his second dunk of the half, pushing Huntington Beach ahead, 59-36, with 7:09 remaining.
