Conventional wisdom says that when a team is leading by two points with 45 seconds left in overtime and 17 seconds left on the shot clock, that team does not take a three-point shot.

Conventional wisdom bit the dust, however, in a first-round game of the Glendale College tournament Wednesday night as Will Burr of the host Vaqueros calmly nailed a 21-foot jump shot from the left side to give Glendale a five-point lead on its way to a 75-71 victory over L.A. Southwest.

Glendale (5-6) will play El Camino, a 91-79 winner over San Diego City, in a second-round game Friday.

“That’s just an option on that play,” Glendale guard Kenny Collins said of Burr’s three-point shot. “Even in that situation, he has the green light if he’s open.”

Burr’s basket gave the Vaqueros a 72-67 lead and L.A. Southwest (6-7) never drew closer than three points thereafter.

Burr, a sophomore from Alemany High, scored a game-high 25 points, and Glendale freshman Ryan Asplund added 17 points.

Freshman Maurice Spillers led L.A. Southwest with 19 points, and freshmen Curtis Galbert and Michael Lawrence each added 13.

Glendale led, 42-34, at halftime, after torching the nets during an 8 1/2-minute stretch near the end of the first half, but the Vaqueros struggled from the field after intermission.

“They stepped up their press a little bit, especially near the end of the game,” Collins said. “But we just weren’t hitting our shots. We missed some easy ones.”

Trailing, 63-59, with 3:14 left in regulation, Glendale narrowed the deficit to 63-62 on Burr’s fourth three-point shot of the game. Galbert followed with a dunk, however, before Collins’ three-pointer tied the score, 65-65, with 1:55 remaining in regulation.

Neither team scored again until overtime.

Glendale made only nine of 33 shots from the field after halftime after hitting 16 of 33 shots in the first half.
