GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Marina Routs Los Alamitos to Win Tournament

Share

Tight defense and a versatile offense allowed Marina to dominate host Los Alamitos, 62-43, Friday night at Cypress High School to win its first Cypress Tournament title.

Marina, which led by as many as 23 points, held a 40-18 halftime advantage,

The Vikings (4-2) ran a quick offense, complete with behind-the-back passes and a variety of shots. And their mobile, man-to-man defense proved almost impenetrable for Los Alamitos, which was noticeably frustrated by the end of the second quarter.

“We were intimidated,” Los Alamitos Coach Mike Ford said. “We weren’t stopping (Marina) inside, and we were not stopping them on fast breaks. They played a level above us in the first half.”

Aimee Periolat, the tournament’s most valuable player, led the Vikings with 14 points.

In the third-place game:

Huntington Beach 58, Kennedy 38--Clare Walker had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead Huntington Beach (6-2).
