In the absence of all-league players Linh Quach and Brandi Tantardini, who were the team’s cornerstone for three seasons and who graduated, Brodowski is wondering where the on-court leadership will come from. “(That) leaves a lot of questions as to the character of this year’s team,” Brodowski said. Robertson and Alvarado, two veterans now in their third year with the varsity, might be the indicated replacements for Quach and Tantardini when it comes to leading the way. Robertson averaged 4.6 points and Alvarado averaged 3.0 points last season. Lisa Nguyen, the other returning starter, lends experience to the front line. The fourth-year coach also faces the dilemma of having a squad seriously hampered by a lack of height. “I’d kill for a big, big (player),” Brodowski said. He’ll have to settle for nobody over 5 feet 9 (Pula) and will have to exploit Bolsa Grande’s speed to possibly generate scoring from fast-break opportunities. Even with the small team, however, Brodowski believes the Matadors can improve on their seventh-place finish last season. “We are looking for a strong showing in the middle of the pack,” he said.
