Kunz earned tournament MVP honors, set a school record for rebounds, and made the game-winning basket with two seconds left in the championship game to give Kennedy a 56-55 victory over Irvine in the Irvine World News basketball tournament last week. Kunz averaged 21 points and 17 rebounds in the last three games of the tournament. In the semifinals against University, Kunz had 33 points and 28 rebounds to lead the Fighting Irish to an 80-73 victory. “We didn’t even realize how many points he scored in that game until we came home and looked in the score book,” Kennedy Coach John Mayberry said. “But the most impressive thing was his rebounding.” Kunz’s 28 rebounds broke a 12-year-old record held by Brian Brittain, who had 27 rebounds against Los Alamitos during an Empire League game in 1980. Kunz, one of three team captains, has averaged 17.4 points and 12.1 rebounds while shooting 54% from the field in Kennedy’s eight games this season.

Other top performers:

Chris St. Clair, the Sonora tournament MVP who scored 20 points in the championship game to lead the hosts over Century, 61-49.

Miles Simon, the Tournament of Champions MVP who scored 24 points to lead Mater Dei to an 85-54 victory over Long Beach Poly in the championship game. Simon averaged 17 points in four tournament games for the Monarchs, ranked No. 1 in the county.
