VALLEY ROUNDUP : Grant Grabs 1st Round 93-92 Win

Darwin Alfelor hit a three-point shot to give Grant High a 93-92, four-overtime victory against Marshall in the first round of the L.A. Invitational boys’ basketball tournament on Monday night.

Alfelor’s shot came with the score tied at 90, and 50 seconds on the clock. Marshall responded with a two-point basket but then missed the front end of a one-and-one that would have tied the game again with 10 seconds remaining.

Alfelor led Grant (4-3) with 20 points. Marshall’s Randy Valle hit seven of the 25 three-point baskets made in the game.

In another L.A. Invitational first-round game:

Monroe 90, Verdugo Hills 74--Kenyatta Niles scored 12 of his 28 points in the first quarter to lead the Vikings (6-2). Senior guard Eddie Powell scored 29 points, dished out eight assists and grabbed 15 rebounds for Verdugo Hills (2-7).

El Camino Real d. Poly by forfeit--The Parrots did not show up for the game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State Northridge 74, Northern Arizona 52--Senior Jody Bittner, who scored a career-high 23 points, made 10 of 17 shots from the field and grabbed nine rebounds. Her scoring total is the highest for a Matador player this season. Michelle Esparaza scored 16 points for Northridge (3-4), which has beaten Northern Arizona twice this season.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 56, Canoga Park 52--Huskie Rachel Fogelhut scored both North Hollywood’s overtime baskets in a consolation game of the Simi Valley tournament. With seconds left in the fourth quarter and the score tied, 52-52, Fogelhut thought North Hollywood was behind and fouled a Canoga Park player, but the player missed both free throws, sending the game to overtime.
