Area Players Dot Cal-Hi Lists

Share

It was a big year for huge numbers. Never before have so many skill-position football players from the area finished at or near the top of so many Cal-Hi Sports statistical lists.

Area quarterbacks finished second, third and fourth on the state yardage list: junior Keith Smith of Newbury Park (3,318 yards in 11 games), senior Davis Delmatoff of Hart (3,194 in 12) and senior Eric Bennett of Simi Valley (3,094 in 12).

Stanford-bound senior Tim Carey of Los Alamitos had a state-high 3,397 yards in 14 games.

Though he finished playing three weeks ago, Delmatoff was No. 1 in the state in touchdown passes with 36. Carey finished with 35, followed by Bennett with 34.

Senior receiver Jason Toohey of Newbury Park finished with 80 receptions to tie George Sagen of Los Alamitos for the state lead.

Junior Leodes Van Buren of Newbury Park was third with 79.

In rushing, senior tailback Eliel Swinton of Montclair Prep finished with 2,384 yards, second only to Jeff Byrd of Garden Grove Rancho Alamitos (2,576).

Senior tailback Fahali Campbell of Camarillo finished fourth with 2,295 yards.

Swinton finished his prep career with a rushing total of 5,884 yards, the third-highest total in state history and only 114 yards behind Crespi’s Russell White in the No. 2 position.

Offense: Excluding touchdown passes of 67 and 49 yards against Sylmar in last week’s inaugural CIF/Reebok Bowl game, the Spartan defense allowed 130 yards--only 52 rushing yards in 23 carries. Sylmar lost to Bishop Amat, 31-10.

Sylmar senior quarterback Deon Price threw neither a touchdown pass nor an interception in five playoff games. This season, Price threw only three interceptions in 131 passes.

Sylmar junior tailback Tyrone Crenshaw (1,875 yards, 22 touchdowns) averaged 8.0 yards a carry. Senior fullback Ibn Bilal (1,214 yards, 18 touchdowns) averaged 11.3. Together, the pair accounted for 3,089 of the team’s 3,730 rushing yards in 14 games.

Sylmar kicker Robert Camacho converted 46 of 58 point-after attempts and kicked his only two field goals in the Spartans’ last two games.

Boys’ basketball: St. Genevieve forward Ryan McGinnis set school records with 38 points and 19 rebounds last week against Mary Star. McGinnis scored the Valiants’ first 16 points in that game.

Highland junior forward Pharaoh Davis, who is shooting 59% from the field, is averaging 15.4 points and 7.6 rebounds. Senior point guard Jermaine Brooks is averaging 7.1 assists.

How is this for balanced scoring? Seven Palmdale players are averaging between seven and eight points. Senior forward Ty Gaines, who averages nine, is the scoring leader for the Falcons (5-2, 3-0).

Girls’ basketball: Palmdale senior point guard Kim Schielke has adjusted nicely to the Falcons’ new up-tempo offense, averaging 26 points through seven games, all victories.

Freshman forward Lindy James scored 53 points during three games of the Campbell Hall tournament to lead Village Christian to the championship. James had a game-high 15 points in the 43-31 championship win over Immaculate Heart and earned most-valuable player honors.

A trio of area players finished the season with 100 goals or more. Jack Kocur of Royal led with 142 (4.89 per game), followed by Agoura’s Terry Polopink with 110 (4.4) and Nordhoff’s David Ford with 100 (4.34).
