SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

With a championship on the line Wednesday night, forward Marion Jones sparked the Thousand Oaks High girls’ basketball team to a 59-51 victory over Brea-Olinda in the large-division final of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

Jones scored 10 of her 38 points in the final 3 minutes 6 seconds as the Lancers broke a 49-49 tie.

Thousand Oaks, which lost last year’s final by seven points to 1992 state champion Peninsula, blew a 13-point, second-quarter lead under the intense pressure of Brea-Olinda’s man-to-man defense.

But just as Jones had led the Lancers (8-0) to that lead with 20 first-half points, she took over again in the final minutes. Jones hit six consecutive free throws and added two field goals, allowing Thousand Oaks to outscore Brea-Olinda, 10-2, down the stretch.

“Marion took over and carried us,” Thousand Oaks Coach Chuck Brown said. “I thought the last three minutes we really showed our character. We could have folded, but we didn’t.”

In addition to her 38 points, Jones grabbed nine rebounds, blocked four shots and added three steals on the way to tournament most-valuable-player honors.

“I don’t think myself or (assistant coach) John Hattrup could guard her,” Brea-Olinda Coach Mark Trakh said.

But Jones received help from Samantha Clarke, who scored nine points, several at key moments in the second half, and dished out four assists, and Alissa Corey, who had seven points and five assists.

Junior guard Nicole Erickson scored 22 points to lead Brea-Olinda.

Palmdale 54, Millikan 44--Latisha Beam scored 21 points, nine during a 17-8 first-quarter Palmdale outburst, to spark the Falcons (9-1) in the fifth-place game.
