OUTLOOK
Irby takes over the coaching reigns from Lynn Taylor, who resigned. Last season, the Diablos started strong but faded and finished a disappointing 4-6 in league. Irby has only one returning starter, but that starter--Gorska--is one of the league’s top players. The Polish emigre’s drastic improvement last season was good enough for a 14.3 scoring average and first-team all-league honors. If Gorska’s play continues to improve and Irby can blend in the new players, the Diablos could prove to be tougher than expected by the time league play rolls around. Chris and Whitaker also return with varsity experience. Defense and rebounding are expected to be the team’s major strengths. The Diablos have five players 5-10 or taller. Okura and Hill are regarded by Irby as the top newcomers. Due to the overall lack of offensive experience, Irby is hoping a pressure defense can get the running game going. If any of the league’s upper-echelon teams stumble, the Diablos could prove to be the league’s dark horse.
