OUTLOOK

Opponents looking for weaknesses against Marina aren’t likely to find many. The two-time defending league champion Vikings return three starters from last year’s team, which reached the Division I-A semifinals. “We have centers, forwards and guards and people who can defend centers, forwards and guard,” Bonny said. “But in this league, we need to.” The Sunset League is indeed tough, but Marina is the early favorite to win a third consecutive title. Trippet, who averaged 15 points and nine rebounds in Marina’s balanced attack last season, is back and fully recovered from a knee injury sustained in April. Also back is Periolat, who will handle point-guard duties and run the team. Nakamura had 33 three-pointers last year and is among the team’s top outside threats, while Orosco and Emde provide versatility. “Our depth gives us a lot of options,” Bonny said. Robbins, Eury and Smillie provide the rebounding core along with Trippet. The Vikings will vary things defensively to keep up with the competition. “You can’t have any letdowns in this league or you’ll get beat,” Bonny said. “You can’t do the same thing every night.”
