COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Shelton Scores 25 Points, Leads Cypress to Tournament Title

Robbie Shelton scored 25 points and got 14 rebounds as Cypress beat College of the Canyons, 75-74, in the championship game of the Canyons tournament Wednesday.

Cypress (15-4) held its one-point lead, but Canyons got off the game’s last shot. Cedric Jones missed a three-pointer and Shelton got the rebounds with five seconds left.

Shelton was an all-tournament selection, and teammate Jim Falletta was named MVP. Teammate Anthony Livingston added 17 points.

It was the 562nd victory for Cypress Coach Don Johnson, leaving him one shy of former Merced Coach Don Reid, who is the winningest community college men’s basketball coach in state history.

In the Rancho Santiago Holiday tournament:

Long Beach 103, Rancho Santiago 101 (OT)--Heath McCoy made a 15-footer with three seconds left in overtime for Long Beach (18-4). Rancho Santiago’s Mike Bradach had made a three-pointer to tie the score at 101-101 with 12 seconds left.

Long Beach led, 45-37, at the half, but Rancho Santiago (11-6) rallied to tie it, 87-87, at the end of regulation. Fred Amos had a team-high 24 points for Rancho Santiago. Ruben Oronoz added 19, Joe Foss 14 and J.J. Ballesteros 13.

Kevin Beal had 25, Rodney Harris 22 and McCoy 18 for Long Beach. McCoy was named the tournament’s MVP.

In the third-place game:

Saddleback 93, Los Angeles Harbor 73--Antoine Jefferson scored 29 points and John Molle added 27 for Saddleback (11-5).

In the Palomar tournament:

Fullerton 89, Palomar 86--Tournament MVP Kevin Carlson scored 26 points, making seven three-point shots, in Fullerton’s (11-7) title-clinching victory. Eddie Cochran added 16 points and seven rebounds.

In the Fullerton women’s tournament:

Golden West 79, L.A. Valley 57--Cinnamon Bosco had a game-high 27 points and Melanie Iwamasa added 17 for Golden West (19-2), which has won nine in a row. Teammate Frances Oda added 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals and was named the tournament’s MVP.
