COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Michigan Completes Sweep of Ranked Teams in Honolulu

Michigan completed an impressive 72 hours with an 86-74 victory over No. 2 Kansas on Wednesday night to win the Rainbow tournament at Honolulu.

The sixth-ranked Wolverines (9-1) had victories over three ranked teams--No. 20 Nebraska, No. 5 North Carolina and Kansas--handing the Tar Heels and Jayhawks their first losses of the season.

They did it virtually every way possible, too. There was an easy 88-73 victory over Nebraska, a 79-78 last-second victory over the Tar Heels and the win over the Jayhawks despite having lost a starter to an injury.

Starting forward Ray Jackson is out indefinitely because of a dislocated left shoulder. He hurt it in the opening two minutes of the North Carolina game.

“Three Top 20s in three days. I don’t know if anybody’s done that,” said Chris Webber, who was named tournament MVP after scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Jalen Rose, who won the game against North Carolina with a rebound basket as time ran out, scored 25 points in the title game and keyed a second-half drive. He also made six of six free throws--the team made 14 of 16--in the final 4:09.

THURSDAY’S GAMES

Minnesota rebounded from its first loss of the season to beat Memphis State, 70-55, at Minneapolis. The Gophers (7-1) lost to Iowa State, 99-65, Tuesday night. Anfernee Hardaway had 30 of Memphis State’s 55 points. The Tigers (5-5) shot 32%. . . . Michael Finley scored 24 points to lead Wisconsin (6-2) to a 76-55 nonconference victory over Fairfield (5-3) at Madison, Wis. . . . Justus Thigpen had 24 points as Iowa State (8-3) had five players in double figures and beat Bethune Cookman, 115-57, at Ames, Iowa.
