An undefeated season is no longer possible for the Crescenta Valley High boys’ basketball team, but the Falcons will undoubtedly contend for the Pacific League championship.

Crescenta Valley’s 11-game winning streak ended Dec. 31 when the Falcons lost to Mira Costa, 70-65, in the championship game of a tournament in Hawaii.

Crescenta Valley, led by All-Southern Section guard Adam Jacobsen, begins play in the Pacific League Friday night against Pasadena, which defeated La Canada, 46-44, for the championship of the Nogales tournament.

Pasadena is led by Donald Guyton, the most valuable player of the Nogales tournament, and Treyvone Towns, who is considered one of the premier athletes in the San Gabriel Valley.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s basketball team began its Western State Conference schedule this week after finishing third in the Palomar tournament last week.

Glendale entered the week with an 8-8 record after losing to Palomar, 87-86, and defeating Fraser Valley, 77-54.

The Vaqueros opened their WSC schedule Tuesday night against Ventura, the state’s top-ranked team. Glendale plays host to Moorpark tonight.

Kenny Collins of Glendale entered the week as the top free-throw shooter in the state at 92%.

The Glendale women’s basketball team entered the week 7-6 after defeating Oxnard, 63-49, in its Western State Conference opener.

Kara Fitzgerald led the Vaqueros with 14 points. Glendale plays host to Moorpark tonight, then travels to Compton Saturday.

Three former Glendale football players are participating in the NFL playoffs.

Mark McMillian, a defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles, played for Glendale in 1987 and 1988 before transferring to Alabama.

Defensive back Chris Hale of the Buffalo Bills played at Glendale in 1986 before transferring to USC.

Bob Gagliano, a backup quarterback for the San Diego Chargers, played at Glendale in 1976 and 1977. He also played at Utah.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College men’s basketball team entered the week 5-4 after winning two of three games last week.

Occidental lost to Wisconsin-Platteville, 75-73, in overtime in the first round of a tournament at Pt. Loma College in San Diego. Sandy Brown scored 16 points and had six rebounds for Occidental.

The Tigers defeated the University of Regina (Canada) in the consolation final, 64-61. Brown had 14 points and 13 rebounds and Phil Engebretsen added 13 points for the Tigers.

Brown had 20 points in Occidental’s 91-58 victory over Fontbonne College (Mo.).

Occidental plays Christ College Irvine on Saturday, Haverford (Pa.) on Monday and opens play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Jan. 13 against Claremont.

The Occidental women’s basketball team entered the week with a three-game winning streak to improve to 5-2.

Jennifer Kunz, who was all-conference for the Tigers’ volleyball team, has led the basketball team’s surge.

Kunz scored 24 points and had eight rebounds and five steals during Occidental’s 71-61 victory over The Master’s College. Kunz had 14 points and 13 rebounds during a 60-59 victory over Muhlenberg College (Pa.). She scored 24 points and had 18 rebounds during an 82-60 victory over Elmhurst College (Ill.).

Betty Lu made a school-record five of six three-point attempts against Elmhurst and finished with 19 points.

Occidental plays Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and Willamette (Ore.) on Saturday.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Nada Kawar, Crescenta Valley-- Kawar led the Falcon girls’ basketball team to the consolation championship of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Kawar was named to the all-tournament team after she scored 16 points and had 19 rebounds in Crescenta Valley’s 56-54 victory over Cabrillo in the consolation championship game. Kawar also had 14 points and 17 rebounds during the Falcons’ 66-37 semifinal victory over Santa Maria.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Jennifer Kunz, Occidental--Kunz averaged more than 20 points a game and led the Occidental women’s basketball team to three consecutive victories.

Kunz is a sophomore forward from Big Creek, Calif.
