HUNTINGTON BEACH : Another Pierfest Is in the Works

Last summer’s festival celebrating the opening of the Municipal Pier proved to be so successful that the city is going to do it again.

Pierfest, in fact, may become an annual summer event, city officials said.

Pierfest ’93 will be Aug. 20 through 22 this year, offering an array of free entertainment and games on the beach and in the Main Street-Pacific Coast Highway area of downtown.

“Pierfest was a tremendous success as both a community event and in establishing a great amount of pride for Huntington Beach,” said Ron Hagan, the city’s director of community services.

Pierfest ’93 co-chairmen are former City Administrator Paul Cook, who will handle pier entertainment; Suzanne Beuhema and the Downtown Business Assn., with responsibility for activities on Main Street, and the Community Services Department, which will handle volleyball and surfing competitions, fishing contests, a pier swim, a run and demonstrations of jet skis, outriggers and kayaks.

Hagan said corporate sponsors for Pierfest ’93 are expected to donate about $40,000 to cover the $37,000 cost, which includes an estimated $24,000 in overtime pay for city workers, including police, who will staff the event.

The City Council last week unanimously approved Hagan’s plans for Pierfest ’93.
