BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Dennis No Menace to Bother as Bell Gardens Wins

It may have been a sibling rivalry between coaches, but it wasn’t much of a game.

Bell Gardens beat Montebello, 67-49, in an Almont League game Friday night that pitted Coach Charlie LaCommare of Bell Gardens against his brother, Coach Dennis LaCommare.

Charlie LaCommare showed no mercy for Dennis--his Lancers led the game from start to finish. Bell Gardens was led by senior forward Mike Curiel’s 20 points and eight rebounds. Simon Garcia scored 10 points, the only other Lancer to score in double-figures.

Montebello never threatened, shooting a paltry one-for-15 from three-point range. Sophomore point guard Arthur Cox led the Oilers with 17 points, but committed seven turnovers.

Bell Gardens, which led by 16 points at halftime, increased its advantage to as many as 20 in the fourth quarter.

FRIDAY’S GAMES

Mary Star 84, Salesian 70--Center Paul Basich had a strong 20-point, 16-rebound performance and forward Tony Dileva added 24 points to lead Mary Star over Salesian in a Santa Fe League game.

Mary Star took an early 30-12 lead, but Salesian ended the second quarter with a 10-2 run and pulled to within 44-37 at halftime. Salesian took its only lead of the game at 56-55 with 7:50 left in the game, but But Mary Star pulled away after hitting 17 of 23 free throws.

Salesian was paced by forward Jimmy Gonzalez, who had 23 points, 11 rebounds and five steals before fouling out with 1:30 left in the game.

Verbum Dei 83, Cathedral 34--Myk’l Williams led the way with 15 points, and Verbum Dei effectively used its all of its players in a one-sided Santa Fe League game at Cathedral.

Andre Coleman, who had nine points, Rodney Webb (six points) and Aldo Gutierrez (six assists) came off the bench for the Eagles and played well in the second half.

Ribet Academy 77, Pilgrim 63--Gary Hackett had 25 points, including five three-pointers, for Pilgrim, but Ribet Academy broke the five-game winning streak in a Heritage League game.

Pilgrim was outscored 19-10 in a pivotal third quarter.

Ribet Academy, the two-time defending Southern Section Division V-AA champions, have a 4-0 league record. Pilgrim drops to second with a 4-1 league record.

Pilgrim 76, Pacific Christian 16--Pilgrim held Pacific Christian to eight points in the first half and then played its reserves to win a Heritage League game.

Pilgrim, which won its fifth consecutive league game, was led by Victor Dean with 17 points. Gary Hackett had 10 points and played outstanding defense for the Patriots.

WEDNESDAY’S GAME

Loyola 67, St. Bernard 59--Toby Bailey and his brother, Ryan, combined to score all of Loyola’s 23 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Cubs to a Mission League victory.

Before the Bailey brothers took over, the teams were tied at the end of the third quarter at 44.

After picking up three fouls in the first quarter, Toby Bailey played only 2:27 of the second quarter and sat out the third, but still managed to score a game-high 29 points, 14 of which came in the final quarter. Ryan Bailey came off the bench to add 15 points for the Cubs.

Greg Metoyer scored 18 points to lead the Vikings, who held a seven-point lead in the third quarter.

Cathedral 73, Salesian 58--Forward Mario Rosas scored 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, and center Ricky Quintero added 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead Cathedral to a Santa Fe League victory.

Salesian took a 6-3 lead in the first four minutes, but Cathedral went on a 10-0 run in the next five minutes and did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.

Guard Jimmy Gonzales sank a three-point shot with 5:01 left in the third quarter to pull Salesian to within two, 35-33. Cathedral then went on a 12-4 run during the next 2:39 to take a comfortable 47-37 lead.

Gonzales scored 16 points and guard Hermino Baca added 15 points to lead the Mustangs.

Bishop Montgomery 87, Loyola 80 (OT)--After a seesaw game that led to a tie at the end of regulation, Loyola managed only three points in overtime and fell to Bishop Montgomery in a Del Rey League game.

After eight lead changes in regulation, Loyola center Toby Bailey hit a jump shot with 11 seconds left to knot the game at 77. The Cubs, down 73-65 with 2:26 remaining, had a 12-4 run that included eight points by Bailey, who ended up leading all scorers with 36 points.
