COLLEGE BASKETBALL REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Pitt Pulls Rank Again, Beats Seton Hall, 76-73

Pretty soon, they will have to let Pittsburgh into the top 25.

With four seconds remaining, Garrick Thomas’ fourth three-point basket gave the Panthers a 76-73 upset of seventh-ranked Seton Hall Saturday night in a Big East Conference game at Pittsburgh--the Panthers’ third victory over a ranked team in 19 days.

“It feels real good to beat the No. 7 team in the nation,” said Thomas, a freshman, who scored 16 points.

Pitt (11-2, 4-2) has beaten UCLA, Connecticut and Seton Hall while winning nine of its last 10 games, and ended the Pirates’ 11-game winning streak.

Terry Dehere had 23 points for Seton Hall (14-2, 4-1).

WEST

Alvin Brown scored 18 points, and Kent Bennett had 16 points and nine rebounds as San Francisco (11-5, 1-1) defeated San Diego, 68-60, in a West Coast Conference game at San Diego. Doug Harris had 18 points for the Toreros (7-7, 2-1). . . . Rick Herrin had 22 points 12 rebounds to lead Nevada (7-5, 2-3) past UC Santa Barbara, 64-58, in a Big West Conference game at Reno. Idris Jones had 16 points for the Gauchos (8-14, 1-3). . . . Pete Eisenrich scored 22 points and Santa Clara (8-7, 2-1) used second-half streaks of 11-0 and 10-0 to register a 63-53 WCC victory over St. Mary’s (4-9, 0-2) at Santa Clara. . . . Bryant Reeves had 22 points and 15 rebounds, and Oklahoma State (9-3, 1-2) made seven of eight free throws to hold on for a 78-73 Big Eight Conference victory over Nebraska (11-5, 0-2) at Stillwater, Okla. . . .
