PREP ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Girls Rally for Victory

After trailing by nine points in the first quarter, Newport Harbor rallied for a 56-53 victory over visiting Corona del Mar in Sea View League girls’ basketball Saturday night.

The Sailors (10-5, 5-0) completed the rally by outscoring Corona del Mar, 22-16, in the final quarter.

Genevieve Evarts led Newport Harbor with 17 points; Michaela Ross added 16 and Mandy Clayton 14. Corona del Mar’s Mollie Flint was the game’s top scorer with 31 points, including five three-pointers.

In other Sea View League games:

Santa Margarita 62, Saddleback 39--Leslie Nolan scored 24 points, and Kelley Moohr added 16 to lead visiting Santa Margarita (5-9, 3-2).

Woodbridge 62, Tustin 38--Angela Burgess had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Lisa Ramos added 14 points for Woodbridge (11-5, 4-1). Sara Davis scored 17 points for Tustin (5-10, 1-4).

University 67, Irvine 16--Jennifer Stanley led University (8-6, 4-1) with 25 points. Melissa Cross had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Irvine’s (1-4) Shawnee Stevens had eight rebounds.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Brea-Olinda 79, La Habra 32--Nicole Erickson had 23 points, including four three-pointers, and Colleen Hudson had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Brea-Olinda (15-2), the county’s top-ranked team.

After one quarter, Brea-Olinda led by six points before blowing the game open and taking a 35-14 halftime lead. Sarah Beckley added 15 points for the Ladycats.

Martha Hernandez scored 11 points for La Habra (8-8).

Torrance 52, Savanna 38--Julie Tamashiro scored 18 points for visiting Torrance. Savanna (7-9) got 23 points from Sara Works.

In Olympic League boys’ basketball:

Brethren Christian 41, Cerritos Valley Christian 37--Tied, 27-27, after three quarters, visiting Brethren Christian opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to take control. The Warriors (10-7, 4-0) held off Valley Christian despite making only seven of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Scott Thomas and Richard Mendoza each scored 10 points for Brethren Christian and Reggie Davis added eight points and 11 rebounds. Lance Williams had 11 points for Valley Christian.

Whittier Christian 64, Ontario Christian 60 (OT)--Tyler Ream had 20 points, and Jeff Rutter added 15 points for Whittier Christian (9-7, 4-1).

Orange Lutheran 76, Calvary Chapel 61--Tony Risberg led a balanced attack for Orange Lutheran with 15 points. Chad Reed added 14 points, and Paul Peterson and Jeoff Greene each had 11 for Orange Lutheran (7-7, 2-2).

Calvary Chapel’s David Hesterly led all scorers with 17 points.
